Oxycodone/Acetaminophen Use at UK Hospital

Oxycodone/Acetaminophen tablets (branded and generic) are now available in 4 strengths: 2.5 mg / 325 mg, 5 mg / 325 mg, 7.5 mg / 500 mg, and 10 mg / 650 mg. The Kentucky Board of Pharmacy requires a specified strength on ALL oxycodone/acetaminophen prescriptions; verbal clarification is not permitted for the schedule II controlled substance. The use of one oxycodone/acetaminophen product is a cost-effective answer to the potential confusion with multiple strength products.

The Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee has approved the automatic stocking and dispensing only one strength tablet – 5 mg oxycodone / 325 mg acetaminophen. If the liquid formulation should be dispensed, that should be indicated on the medication order.
