Suggested Guidelines for the Use of Meperidine

The Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center has approved an automatic stop date of 24 hours on all orders for meperidine. Use of the drug beyond 24 hours requires an attending physician order.

The following suggested guidelines for the use of meperidine were also approved by the Committee:

  • Treatment of drug-induced (e.g. amphotericin B, biological response modifiers) or blood product-induced (platelets, PRBC) rigors
  • Treatment or prevention of post-anesthesia shivering
  • Neuraxial analgesia administered by the Department of Anesthesiology when other agents cannot be used
