Calcium Channel Blocker Therapeutic Interchange
 

A therapeutic interchange for sustained release calcium channel blockers was approved by the UK Hospital Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee in December.  The competing products were deemed to be equivalent on the basis of safety and efficacy profiles.  The therapeutic interchange does not require a physician’s order, but will be documented on the medication administration record (MAR).

• Tiazac® (dilitazem sustained release) will be dispensed for all orders for Cardizem CD® or diltiazem sustained release. 

• Adalat CC® (nifedipine sustained release) will be dispensed for all orders for Procardia XL® or nifedipine sustained release.
